Sakadama is a harder-fired (600 degrees) clay mineral from South Africa. The mineral has expanded during the process, giving it excellent drainage properties by absorbing up to 85% water (which is more than Akadama). Sakadama has air-filled pores (approximately 30%). (We currently lack data on whether these pores have gas exchange with the surroundings.)

Sakadama is a good water retainer with a neutral pH and ion exchange function that preserves nutrients in the pot.

The intense firing at 600 degrees makes the grains fluffier and more stable. This makes it suitable for older trees that will remain in the pot for many years. It also works well for succulents or to improve drainage when mixed with Akadama.

As we interpret it, Sakadama behaves like a middle ground between Akadama and pumice.
