Nutrition

Just like you and me, your bonsai needs nourishment. The tree should grow slowly, but a bonsai tree is never truly finished. That’s one of the beauties of this hobby – you can evolve with your trees over an extended period. If you take the hobby seriously, your trees can be passed down through generations.

But back to nourishment. Since at least outdoor bonsai are well-drained, some of the nutrients will pass straight through or leach out during rain or regular watering. Therefore, bonsai trees need regular access to new nutrients. The amount depends on the type of tree, so read up a bit before you start dosing. Too much fertilizer is often more immediately dangerous than too little, so it’s better to wait a few days until you’ve had time to educate yourself.
