Seeds

Bonsai is not limited to specific species. Bonsai can be created from any woody plant, including shrubs. The crucial factor is that you can replicate the microclimate, either indoors or outdoors, that the tree experiences in its natural habitat. If you are cultivating in your garden or on your balcony (which is most common), you need to choose trees that thrive in your climate. This can include Nordic species found in the local environment, as well as Canadian or Asian species from regions with similar climates. You can also cultivate indoor bonsai, in which case any plants available at your local flower shop that can withstand our dry winters and hot summers will work.

If you also have access to a cool winter storage area, you can experiment with Mediterranean plants that require ample light but must avoid frost.

You can choose to purchase ready-made bonsai trees, regular trees/shrubs from a nursery, or grow them from seeds. Some species may be harder to find, making seed cultivation a viable option. Take a look below and see if you find anything of interest.
