Downy Cherry, Prunus tomentosa, plant from 2014, pre-bonsai. The species produces beautiful pink buds that open into white flowers on bare or nearly bare branches. During the summer, small red cherries, which are edible, form. The bark has an attractive coppery hue. The leaves are alternate, and the tree branches out well when pruned.

We prefer that you pick up your tree in Skara. If you are unable to do so, we can ship it. We only ship trees up to 1500 SEK.
We only ship trees on Mondays to prevent them from being stuck in a warm (or cold) terminal over the weekend.
We only ship at suitable temperatures. Indoor trees, minimum 10 degrees Celsius, and all trees maximum 22 degrees Celsius.
We recommend picking up your tree within a day of it reaching the pickup location.
The Distance Purchase Act does not apply to live trees, but we take responsibility for transport damage if you send a picture within a day of it arriving at the pickup location.
Have your camera ready while you open the box. A late photo, or a photo taken after the tree is fully unpacked, will not be accepted.
Please note that this guarantee is voluntary on our part, and we have a photo of how it looked when it was packed.

Outdoor Trees

Weather and Wind
The plant originally comes from northeastern China and Mongolia. It enjoys sun and warmth during the summer but is quite tolerant of cold weather. The fuzzy leaves provide some protection against drying winds. However, the tree does not like its roots to dry out. It survives up to zone 4, possibly even more if you are not concerned about losing flowering.

During the winter, I use an unheated greenhouse, covering the trees with bubble wrap (loosely hanging on top). The greenhouse maintains a more stable temperature through two 250-liter water barrels and a leaf and grass compost that emits some heat even in winter. Note that warm days during winter can quickly dry out your tree!

Repotting
Every other year for young trees, every third year for older trees. Young trees have strong root growth and can be pruned quite heavily. Older trees are more sensitive, especially to larger interventions. Use a well-draining but water-retaining mixture with a slightly lower pH. For example, kanuma, perhaps with akadama or pumice.

Fertilization
Solid, organic fertilization is best as it provides calm and moderate growth. Avoid too much nitrogen if you want proper flowering. Fertilize during summer and late summer from when the fruit is fully grown. Before that, fertilization may disrupt flowering. Avoid spring fertilization unless you need vigorous growth with long internodes.

Pruning
Let the branches grow out a bit before cutting to avoid them dying off. Prune after flowering. Buds for next year are set in late summer. Towards autumn, you can cut the older shoots down to two or four nodes. Since the leaves come alternately on the left and right sides, you can choose the next growth direction quite well by choosing the pruning site. During autumn and winter, you can cut thicker branches.

Wiring
Wiring cherries is best done during autumn and winter.

Sending plants requires timing, proper packaging, correct weather, and communication between us.
