Outdoor Trees – read the care instructions below

The tree is 36 years old, approximately 20 cm including the pot, purchased in 2020, and has been with us since then. It has been pruned in a few places every year and received a branch wrap in 2021.

It has had it a bit too good, and two small branches have the youthful structure. I leave them in place as growth points. They can always be removed later.

The style of the tree is quite elegant with a dramatic trunk and a small jin.

One of the jins has traces of wire scars, but these can be sanded off if desired.

Height: approximately 20 cm
Pot: brown ceramic
Repotted: scheduled for repotting in 2023

We prefer that you pick up your tree in Skara. This tree is not shipped!

Outdoor Trees

Weather and Wind
Juniperus chinensis thrives in plenty of sun and warmth during the summer. During winter, it needs protection from frost below -10 degrees. Like some other evergreen plants, it changes color and may turn brown/red when frost arrives. This is part of the plant’s way of protecting itself from frost by producing carbohydrates that act as frost protection. Be cautious with excessive watering. This species is sensitive to overly wet roots. Let it be slightly moist before watering again.

During winter, I use an unheated greenhouse, covering them with bubble wrap (loosely draped on top). The greenhouse maintains a more stable temperature with two 250-liter water drums and leaf and grass compost providing some warmth even in winter. Note that warm days during winter can quickly dry out your tree!

Repotting
Occurs every other year. Longer intervals for older trees. Use a well-draining but water-retaining mixture, such as akadama and pumice. Maybe with a bit of bark.

Fertilization
Use normal organic pellets as fertilizer every month. If you want vigorous growth, give it a bit of extra nitrogen in spring. You can also use water-based fertilizer, but more frequently according to the package instructions.

Pruning
The crown of the Chinese juniper tends to become very compact. Branches not receiving sunlight may turn brown and die. At the same time, it can become too moist and sheltered, allowing pests to reproduce. Hedge pruning in the branches is not liked by the Chinese juniper. Rather, cut off small branches, with sharp scissors, at the base to ventilate the branches. Cavities will soon be filled with new growth. It tolerates heavy pruning, but it does not produce new branches on bare branches, so save some green mass where you want growth!

Wrapping
The Chinese juniper is resilient when it comes to bending branches, but be cautious with larger interventions and wrap the branches with a protective medium. If you have deadwood sections, these are not very flexible. Try moistening them a bit before bending to increase the chances of them holding. But we do not recommend bending already deadwood. Flatten the branches to avoid broccoli-like growth of the tree.

Sending plants requires timing, robust packaging, proper weather, and communication between us.
